Simplified Audit Process for Product Managers

No we are not talking complex excels or loads of printed material and sense of fear among employees 🙂

The whole objective is to understand the current maturity level of product processes (not people) and identify the scope of improvement or reduction of overemphasized and inefficient processes or practices aligning to current strategy.

This is a systematic process but here we are presenting a much simplified version so group product manager or senior product manager can audit one or more products annual basis.

Lets start with the sample audit, scoring and conclusion –

Do you understand the org vision and mission statements and agree with them?Yes
Do you have company and product strategy available with you?Yes
Do you create initiatives, goals and break down features aligning with org/product vision/strategy?Yes
Do you prefer to replicate your competitors over strategy defined in place?Partially yes
Do you have KPIs well defined for your products success and failure criteria?Partially yes
Calculation and Interpretation:

Each question carries 1 point for Yes, 0 for No and .5 for Partially Yes
Above sample audit score is 4 out of 5 which is 80% and good if your product is doing good and leadership and YOU are okay with the performance. 

However as this is an annual audit should be taken to next level to understand the feasibility of improving 20%.

Conclusion - This is as simple as revisiting your AOP & KPIs and should be completed in 1 hour. If you are not able to finish this in 1 hour then probably you need to sit back and reflect upon these audit score and underlying detractors.
